Frequently Asked Questions

What does Tenfour do?

We are an IT Infrastructure Utility company. That means we deliver private network infrastructure, such as routers, switches, wireless access points, IP phones and IoT devices, in a subscription service, just like your water, gas or electricity. We don’t just build and operate IT infrastructures; we own them. We’re not a cloud computing company, but we’ve taken the cloud model and extended it beyond compute and storage to all your business platforms including WAN, LAN, UCC, Data Center, Network Security, Physical Infrastructure and IoT. It’s a less complicated model for IT where we share the risk and we’re on the hook if anything goes wrong. Since it’s a pay-per-use service, you have greater agility to scale your business to meet your needs. Get rid of technical debt—we proactively refresh our IT infrastructure so you have a solid platform with reduced downtime. This means your team is free to focus on the applications and data that create a differentiated customer experience and grow your business.

What is the history of the company?

Headquartered in Morristown, NJ, TenFour is a privately owned organization with a rich history of providing integrated IT solutions to hundreds of customers. For 20 years we have delivered the most complete approach for transforming our customers’ outdated IT infrastructure into useful, profitable and beneficial networks. We were founded as Alliant Technologies in 1998 by a group of engineers who wanted to design, deploy and manage sophisticated global communications networks. We started as VAR and built a strong reputation as the company that solved hard problems. We won all kinds of awards from the biggest and best industry players who recognize our innovation and focus on delivering superior service to our customers.

Throughout these years, we gained a deep understanding of what its customers need: lower operational costs, ability to focus on strategic initiatives, predictable expenses and minimized network downtime. Simply put, customers need to focus their time and resources on driving value for their organization. In 2016, we developed a state-of-the-art Network Operations Center (NOC) to provide and support managed services. Still, we knew there had to be a better way to deliver IT while generating business value for our customers—and we decided to do something about it. A new consumption model was required to reliably manage the rapidly increasing number of end points resulting from factors such as the “Internet of Things” (IoT) and the now pervasive and exponentially growing “big data”. Proprietary Reference Architectures were rigorously researched, developed and tested for specific industry verticals, resulting in higher performance, fewer defects and increased security. After lots of hard work, success and failure, we charted a new path for the IT industry.

While the name Alliant served us well, by 2016 we recognized that the industry was growing and changing and we needed to do the same. We needed a brand that aligns with our new vision for IT infrastructure; a name that conveys how we listen to our customers and to the industry. That we understand the needs of the market and we’ll deliver as promised. We’ve got this. Message received. Today we are TenFour.

Tell me more about the subscription model

TenFour created a new type of model for consuming IT infrastructure: an IT infrastructure subscription model. We’re not your business software, we’re not the Cloud, and we’re not an inflexible costly Managed Service Provider. TenFour is the wide area network you’ve been maintaining for years; the IoT devices that generate your data; the voice, video and chat system that unites your employees. We deliver your IT infrastructure—circuits, routers, switches, Wireless Access Points, cabling and more—as an easily consumed monthly service.

Just like you don’t own the power lines and transformers that deliver your electricity, you don’t lease or own the frictionless IT infrastructure we provide. The same way you expect the electricity to turn on when you flip the switch, you can expect TenFour’s service to just work.

Since it’s a subscription, we are on the hook for every aspect of your infrastructure’s performance. Our Service Level Agreements are real SLAs – we don’t hide behind means and averages. We commit to service based on time to restore and if we fail, you don’t need to chase us down; we notify you immediately and make it right.

The reasons you’ve moved to the Cloud are the same reasons leading global enterprises are moving their IT infrastructure to our utility: it is a flexible model that offers the agility to change with your business, secure technology that is always current, and lower, predictable costs.

What's the difference between TenFour and traditional managed services?
TenFour has predictable cost, simplified architecture, stronger security and fewer defects than traditional Managed Services. Because our model is subscription-based, we own the infrastructure – and all the associated risk - and you pay for what you use in a simple OpEx model. No more nickel and diming, no more haggling with multiple vendors and no more technology debt with equipment refresh included.
What is a refererence architecture and how does it work?

TenFour uses industry-specific IT Reference Architectures to deliver standardized parts for repeatable solutions in a highly automated operation—resulting in a more reliable service with fewer defects, lower TCO and stronger security posture.

Reference Architectures are:

  • Standardized architectural platform designs
  • that represent pre-validated functional elements
  • that support an ongoing review and evolution strategy
  • which aligns to customer business outcomes
  • and is supported by TenFour lifecycle services

Our IT infrastructure is founded on tested & proven IT reference architectures. We’ve built standardized platform designs developed to solve customer business use cases. These consist of validated functional elements, using standardized configurations. They simplify sales, delivery and operations through reduced variables and applied automation methods.

For example, just like the power company, you don’t worry about the brand of power lines, the model of the transformer, the components, the vendor negotiations, the hardware refreshes – it is encapsulated within the utility service. That’s how TenFour’s IT Infrastructure utility works. We select, test and implement the right components so we deliver a repeatable, reliable service, which results in fewer defects, and less resources. Then we keep it proactively refreshed at regular intervals, so that you never have to worry about technology debt.

How do I transition to the TenFour model?

No matter where you’re starting, we have a path for you. How you’ll get there depends where you’re starting. We know that the move to utility infrastructure can’t happen overnight. We’ve been dealing with that for years. You need to work at a pace that makes business and financial sense for you and your company. If you have existing hardware but it is not Reference Architecture com¬pliant, we’ll leave it in place and operate it for you. When it is depreciated, we will migrate it to our IT Infrastructure Utility. If you have existing hardware that is compliant with our Reference Architecture, we will transfer title, upgrade it to our TenFour model. If your hardware is end-of-life (EoL) or you have greenfield sites, we deploy TenFour. Say goodbye to End of Life.

How do I get started?

Once we’ve decided on a path that’s right for you, we have a strategy to keep you moving forward in the Digital Age. We begin by conducting a Catalyst study, our embedded service that enables us to understand your business goals, perform a technology assessment of your current state and build a roadmap for the future that ties to measurable business outcomes. As we stay engaged, we will continue to perform Catalyst studies to ensure that we’re staying on track, delivering significant improvements for your business, and making any necessary modifications to meet your evolving business needs.

How do we stay engaged?

Our team of Customer Success & Lifecycle Executives (CLE) is dedicated to guiding customers through their own transformations by serving as advocates and strategic partners to our client executive teams. TenFour CLEs are change agents who facilitate digital transformation, and guide the business value shift from Information Age delivery to Digital Age advantage. They do this by making strategic, technical recommendations based on business analytics from complex IT reporting systems and developing plans that improve IT operations and business metrics.

How does TenFour improve my security posture?

TenFour takes a multi-faceted approach to Cyber Security, including a Defense in Depth method to security architecture. The two layers of the Defense in Depth framework, Network and Host/System, are critical, but well understood and matured. These are the layers where your security teams are spending most of their time and activities. We provide all the Network layer security and most of the Host/System layers. Our Virtual Private Infrastructure service is embedded with AAA, NetFlow, SGT, 802.1X, patch management and syslog—these are included as core capabilities. Additional advanced cyber security capabilities can be added as an IT Unit (ITU) in a consumption-based model.

With our network security services, your underlying network infrastructure contains the requisite protections so that your team can focus its real-time security efforts on the much more vulnerable inner layers: Application and Data. TenFour’s fully embedded network cyber security solutions lower your surface attack area in support of attack prevention, risk reduction, and framework compliance requirements.

How does TenFour lower my total cost of ownership?

Get greater flexibility and improved cash flow with our pay-as-you-use “as-a-Service” model that gives you the flexibility to scale operations without CapEx budget constraints. Our model removes/reduces soft costs and labor costs because everything is included in one monthly, metered price. No longer are you bearing the cost of assets already purchased and waiting to be deployed or in inventory.

Our IT Unit (ITU) price includes all the costs for delivering the service. For example, no unexpected fees for truck rolls or sunny day changes. Change happens, quite frequently. However, most providers in the industry require customers to perform the day-to-day changes that keep infrastructure running smoothly. They nickel and dime you, making every change an additional cost. Even worse, they’re inconsistent with how quickly they respond. TenFour takes a different approach. With Sync we remotely perform the modifications required to support in-life operations. We more efficiently take over the operations administrative functions which are traditionally assigned to a vast number of customers’ in-house IT employees. Those IT headcounts are ultimately repurposed to other strategic IT roles within the CIO’s organization.

The cost of the service will not go up over the term of the contract. As new infrastructure is required, enterprises do not need to wait for a CapEx cycle. When IT infrastructure is at the point of upgrading, there is no additional cost to the enterprise.

Customers want the first response to an incident to be handled competently. In fact, many of our existing customers have stated that knowing the incident is understood and addressed by a professional is more important than the speed of resolution. TenFour does both very well.

TenFour monitors our customers’ network environment’s right from our HQ, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. This service is provided from our state-of-the-art, US-based Network Operations Center (NOC). Our NOC is staffed with operations engineers with Masters Degrees that are highly trained and supported with automated systems, tools and procedures that enable rapid triage and resolution. Our expert operations engineers manage every solution component across all vendors, whether on-premises or off-premises. TenFour’s Remote Monitoring and Management ensures the customer’s infrastructure is functioning at the highest possible level based on defined performance metrics. The Company’s co-management portal delivers near real-time visibility into the customer’s infrastructure, devices, and incident tickets.

No need to buy a dozen different software packages and associated maintenance. Our NOC manages across platforms and offers co-management so you have access to all the embedded data collection tools for real-time reporting and full read/write access and control. Most importantly we have replaced traditional monitoring methodologies with one that improves customers’ security posture and provides a holistic view of all the ITUs in their domain.

Just like gas, water and electric utilities, consumption economics has revealed that many industries are moving to subscription based utilities. Some subscription services are public and some private. They all sell units; some shared and some are dedicated.

TenFour provides an IT Infrastructure subscription unit, called an ITU (IT Unit). ITUs are TenFour-owned discrete, measurable objects requiring management, including any associated components that are installed in or on the object. Example ITUs are: electronic devices, software applications, physical infrastructure, and telecommunication circuits. It is everything required to deliver a capability or service: the core ITU and all the services and components that make it work.

Our private, dedicated strategy means each ITU contains:

  • Embedded Services
  • One Price across lifecycle
  • Lifecycle timing by asset type or customer
  • One asset to one customer
  • Customer (not TenFour) controlled data
  • Asset on vendor or customer premises
  • Proactive technology refresh

We deliver ITUs because we understand what our customers want: agility of a consumption-based model, the right technical capabilities that will power their digital initiatives, and for it to just work so they can stay focused on their core business.

Each ITU is embedded with all the lifecycle services required to design, deliver and operate the IT infrastructure (TenFour’s Sync, Beacon, Gear, Gearsmith, Catalyst and Network Security).

CATALYST: A study that enables us to understand your business goals, perform a technology assessment of your current state and create a roadmap for the future that ties to measurable business outcomes.

GEAR: Pre-selected and tested hardware, software, telecom and physical infrastructure delivered as a utility service with built-in technology refresh at zero cost to you.

ADMINISTER: Day 2 system changes and proactive maintenance implemented quickly so operations sync with business needs.

MONITOR: 24x7x365 remote monitoring, network mapping, ticket creation and network inspection.

REPAIR: Hard-working teams of experts, remote and on-site, that act fast and make things right again.

Additionally, our ITU price includes all the costs for delivering the service. For example, no unexpected fees for truck rolls, project management, standard cabling or sunny day changes. All the hard and soft costs are included at one simple price.

TenFour has stronger SLAs than traditional managed services. TenFour is held accountable and measured to exacting standards through each step of the recovery process. Further, our SLAs are time to resolve, not notify, and there are no means or averages—they performed on a “per ITU, per incident” basis. We hold ourselves accountable; if for any reason, we miss a promised SLA, we’ll notify you and provide a credit to the monthly service charge.

When the Cloud model is applied to all your core and distributed infrastructure—from routers, switches and firewalls to phones, WiFi and cameras—your network just works so you can focus on innovation. With TenFour, your business will benefit from an OpEx model that includes scalability, speed to deployment, technology upgrades, reduced technical defects, lower business risk and simpler business transactions. TenFour’s service spans 7 IT infrastructure platforms (WAN, LAN, UCC, DC, NetSec, PI, IoT) to address the enterprises’ end-to-end solution needs. Our IT Utility delivers:

We make IT frictionless so your infrastructure can adapt to your dynamic business. Our value props include:

  • OBJECTIVE MEASUREMENT OF BUSINESS VALUE: We measure for lower Total Cost of Ownership, increased reliability and greater agility using real metrics proven in the first, third and fifth year.
  • IT INFRASTRUCTURE AS-A-SERVICE: We own it. You only pay for what you use. Similar to kWh and BTUs, we deliver ITUs—IT Units with the entire lifecycle embedded. This means greater flexibility to respond to your business with improved spend and predictability.
  • CLOUDIFYING THE UNCLOUDABLE: Not only are we delivering routers and switches as a service, we are also cloudifying antennas, wiring and IoT elements. Avoid technology debt with a proactive refresh. End result: fewer defects and an improved security posture.
  • WHEN IT BREAKS, IT’S REALLY OUR PROBLEM: We give you a real SLA with a true time to repair from root cause to resolution (and not one of those weak average SLAs). We provide a single point of accountability. No more finger pointing.
  • SHARED RISK AND GREATER AGILITY: We’re in this together. No more bearing all the financial, technical and operational risk. Since you can turn the service off and on, you finally get the agility to have your IT respond to changes in your business.
  • REMOVE TECHNOLOGY DEBT: Aging and obsolete equipment leads to increased defects and security vulnerabilities. We refresh your gear every 4-5 years, included as part of the service. This means your network is more reliable and you are always technologically current.
  • GREATER VISIBILITY WITH EMBEDDED TOOLS: No need to buy a dozen different software packages and associated maintenance. Our 24/7/365 US-based NOC manages across platforms and offers co-management so you have access to all the embedded data collection tools for real-time reporting and full read/write access and control.
